Carry on captain
Powerhouse centre Dafydd Lockyer will once again be wearing the captain’s armband for Pontypridd when rugby eventually resumes.
By now a senior member of the Ponty squad, Lockyer had indicated that he might retire from Premiership level at the end of last season.
An early finish to that campaign, an extended period of rest and time to dwell on his situation led Lockyer to rethink and decide on another season with the club he has served so well for the best part of seventeen years.
Once that decision was made, the Pontypridd management team were quick to follow with an announcement that Lockyer would once again captain the squad.
“Daf is a real talisman for our club” commented Director of Rugby Justin Burnell. “He has been very loyal to the cause for so many years and I have built up a special relationship with him since first bringing him to Ponty back in 2003.
“He leads by example both on and off the field, he’s a big character around the changing room, the ideal personality to have around.”
According to Burnell, Lockyer fully deserves another term as a player and as a captain.
“He hit some of the best form of his career last season” said Burnell, “only missing a couple of games, staying injury free and showing great commitment and enthusiasm. The fact that he stays with us and with so many younger players of potential around him, that is a sign of good things to come for the club.”
