The “Gareth Jones Challenge Trophy” was presented to Pontypridd coach Paul John by his Neath opposite number Rowland Phillips, following the league encounter between the two clubs on Saturday 13th September.
The trophy was in recognition of the efforts of representatives of both Pontypridd RFC and Neath RFC who took part in the BUPA Great Wales Run in Cardiff Bay on 27th July 2008, raising money for the “Gareth Jones Trust Fund”.
The old man showed them the way home in the Great Wales Run - Ponty coach Paul John proving there is still plenty of life in those old legs as he completed the 10 kilometre course around Cardiff Bay in 44 minutes, 20 seconds.
Paul led the charge from the Pontypridd club to help the Neath players raise funds for the fund set up to remember Gareth “Snid” Jones. It was a terrific turn-out from both clubs and both sets of players helped to raise more than £5,000 through sponsorship.
Race organizers Nova International put up a trophy for the winning team. The times of the first four players to finish and the fitness coaches were added together and an average time taken. Ponty won by a distance and it meant at least one trophy didn’t find its way to The Gnoll this year!
Congratulations to all those who took part. Thanks to everyone who sponsored them. The money raised is going to a very good cause. Nova International have offered to back a re-run in next year’s race in the Welsh capital.
