Captain’s Blog

"This is your captain speaking"

Its a strange situation we find ourselves in at the moment, the first time I can remember a season being cut short as it was, but of course done for all the right reasons to keep people safe during the current crisis – no one can argue with that.

It had been a pretty strange season for us, with no trophies lined up and looking back at so many games where we played well but failed to take our chances and too often lost out in the last play of the game, especially way from home, which came back to bite us.

Overall it was a decent showing from us, we finished on a real high with a good win away at Merthyr and a lot of new players, a lot of youngsters came through and showed up well. That must bode well for the future. Of course one big positive was that Cardiff, after leading the Premiership for so long and getting to the last rounds of the Cup, still didn’t win anything!

Talking of the future, its difficult to look any further ahead than the here and now. No one knows how all of this is going to pan out or when we’ll be back in squad training never mind playing.

All we can do at the moment as individuals is to keep to some kind of fitness regime – I’m out on the bike and running a lot more but doing far less weights as all the gyms are closed, and I’ve lost a good stone in weight so far as I’m not bulking up.

Its every man for himself but we’ll try to keep fit and be ready to go when we get the call back to training ready for next season. I had plans to call it a day at the end of this season but I’ve had a good chat with the coaches and decided that if I’m wanted and can contribute then I’ll play on. I stayed pretty much injury free last season and with a good rest now during the lockdown I feel that I’ll be good to go for another winter. I’m also nearing that 400 appearance mark for Ponty and I can’t think of a better way to finish off my career.

I’ve also been working on my coaching badges, done my level one and two and going now for level three, and helping out with Ponty in that capacity could also be a bonus.

Planning ahead is all well and good but the most important thing right now is that we all stay safe and stay healthy. I hope that all Ponty supporters and their families are getting through this crisis and staying positive.

Hope to see you all again back at the House of Pain ASAP – whenever that will be!
