Supporters’ Blog – Ian Gittins

Well, back in March I don’t think many people were wondering when would they watch their next game of rugby, but here we are only a week away from our ‘normal’ season starting and the majority of people are thinking it won’t be in 2020.

For me the last six months have been very strange as I have been shielding and for the large part of that time I have been stuck in the house or playing out in the garden with my son Cameron. As he is aged only seven it has been hard to explain to him why we haven’t been watching Ponty most weekends when that is all that he has known literally all of his life.

Similar to Cameron, watching Ponty week in week out is all I have known, with my father (Graham) having been part of the club as player, captain and committee man for over sixty years, so having been a prisoner in my own house and having no rugby (including the Scottish trips that I was looking forward to) it has been a time to forget!

I would like to thank the club’s media team for keeping us entertained with various news stories, videos, blogs etc throughout the lockdown period but there is nothing like the real thing so hopefully we will see some movement towards playing rugby soon. Until then I will have to get by with the odd Scrum V match, a few old games on S4C and the English and Southern Hemisphere games on BT and Premier Sports.

Looking forward – what are my expectations?

From the team, I am looking for some more consistency and a continuation of introducing some new faces. Last season we had some great results but also had a number of games we shouldn’t have lost – the away games at Cardiff and Carmarthen Quins are just two that come to mind.

From the club in general, I would like to see everybody pulling in the same direction and more of the younger generations (god I sound old!) investing in the club that they like coming to, week in week out. Fund raising groups such as Friends of Pontypridd have participants with an average age over 60, with one being 100 in a couple of weeks!

I look forward very much to catching up with friends, old and new, before too long.

Ian Gittins.
