‘Thank you for the music’ – Phil Lycett
The ‘music man’ of Pontypridd RFC, Phil Lycett is standing down from his DJ duties after more than thirty years of providing entertainment on match days and during events at the club.
As much of a fixture at Sardis Road as the goal posts or the corner flags, Phil would take his perch high in the back of the stand and pump up the volume through the stadium loudspeakers to provide the backing music for supporters. His disco nights during social events at the club also became the stuff of legend.
Having celebrated his 76th birthday last week, Phil has decided that it is high time to hand over the sound equipment to the next generation.
“I’ve been doing the music at Sardis Road for donkeys’ years” said Phil as he announced his retirement. “I’m not getting any younger and with the old knee playing up its getting more difficult getting about and carrying equipment around the place. Its something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed doing over the years and will definitely miss, but I know that now is the right time to step down.”
Phil Lycett has been a cornerstone of Pontypridd RFC for many decades and will maintain his close links with the club he loves. He remains as an official of the Supporters’ Club and will carry on organising coach travel to away games.
“If I didn’t organise the buses I’d still be travelling on them to watch Ponty” said Phil “so I may as well carry on with those duties, which are less demanding. I look forward to a bit more down time on match days, being able to enjoy a pint before and after the game, meet up with friends and relax. I think I’ve earned that.”
The sincere thanks of all at Pontypridd RFC will go to Phil Lycett for the many hours entertainment he provided over so many years – thank you for the music, the songs you played us.
