Pontypridd v Cardiff – Match Report

Pontypridd were defeated by a scoreline of 45-6 in their penultimate Welsh Premiership Cup group stage game against Cardiff.

Cardiff had the first chance of the game when fullback Cameron Winnett made a break but scrum half Rory Harries was unable to collect the pass with the line at his mercy.

Pontypridd were penalised for holding on and Dan Fish opened the scoring for Cardiff with his successful penalty attempt.

Cardiff got the first try of the game when Fish made a break and rounded the final defender. Fish converted and took the away side 10-0 in front.

Pontypridd got their first points of the game in the 24th minute when fly half Tyler Morris slotted over a penalty.

The away side got their second of the game when hooker Iestyn Harris crashed over from the back of a driving line-out. Fish converted to extend Cardiff’s lead.

Pontypridd closed the gap to eleven after Morris slotted his second penalty of the afternoon after a Cardiff infringement.

Cardiff got their third try on the stroke of half time – a pass found centre Ryan Wilkins in space and he made no mistake with the finish. Fish converted and that was the end of the action for the first 40.

Half time: Pontypridd 6-24 Cardiff

Cardiff got their bonus point try shortly after half time when Wilkins crossed for his second after getting on the end of Fish’s pass.

Shortly after, centre Ioan Evans intercepted a Pontypridd pass and crossed underneath the posts. Fish converted to extend the lead.

Pontypridd were reduced to 14 men on the 65 minute mark when Morgan Bosanko was shown a yellow card by referee Jason Bessant.

Cardiff then got their sixth try of the game when winger James Beal crossed in the corner. Jack Maynard’s conversion was successful.

Pontypridd thought they had their first try of the game in the dying embers but referee Bessant had deemed the ball to have been held up. That saw the full time whistle blow with Pontypridd unable to cross for a well deserved try.

Pontypridd will be looking to bounce back next Saturday as they make the long trip north to face RGC in the final round of Premiership Cup action.
