Player Microscope – Ceri Morris

Ceri Morris: Centre

Born in Carmarthen, Ceri attended Ysgol Dyffryn Aman (Amman Valley Comprehensive). He played football in his fledgling years before taking up rugby at junior level for Pontyberem RFC. Ceri then joined his hometown club of Ammanford RFC to play his youth and senior rugby.

When in school year 11, Ceri won the Welsh Cup against Caerleon Comprehensive School. Some excellent displays caught the eye of the Scarlets and Ceri represented the region’s U16’s and U18’s sides whilst playing for Llandovery in the Welsh Premiership when he was 18.

Ceri then moved East to attend Cardiff Met University and played for their first team during the first year of his studies. Unfortunately, he then got injured halfway through his first year and was side-lined for two years after two shoulder operations.

After qualifying as teacher Ceri joined Pontypool RFC during his first year of teaching and had two seasons with Pooler. Ceri speaks fondly of his time with them saying: “They are a great club who deserve to play in the premiership week in, week out.”

Ceri then decided to move to Glamorgan Wanderers in the summer of 2021 for more game time but during this time he had the opportunity to train with Pontypridd at the end of August last year. Ceri said: “The opportunity to train with Pontypridd was one I couldn’t turn down and it’s something I have not regretted. I was asked to stay full time and sign a contract. It’s a privilege and an honour to wear the famous Ponty shirt and there’s a great atmosphere and buzz when playing on the famous house of pain.”

Talking about his ambitions with the club he commented: “I’ll keep working hard and learning and get as many appearances as possible for such a great club. It’s a very good environment to be involved in but I’m slowly turning grey with some of the things Bradley Rodrick says on the pitch during a game!”

A future ambition that’s very close to Ceri’s heart is one that involves his hometown club Ammanford RFC. He said: “One day it would be great to represent Ammanford in a match with my three brothers which I think would be a club record. Three of us have played together at once but not the four of us!” (Photo below).

Ceri is currently a PE teacher in Ysgol Glantaf and is thoroughly enjoying his job there – “A rewarding job seeing the development and success of the students across a number of sports,” he said.

Ceri’s made a good start to life at Pontypridd RFC making 7 appearances so far for the club.
