Pontypridd picked up their first away win of the campaign with a hard-fought 21-15 victory over Carmarthen Quins.
The home side took an early lead when fly half Jac Wilson knocked over a penalty in the 2nd minute.
Ponty hit back in the 9th minute when a period of pressure saw them awarded a penalty which was scored by Joseph Scrivens.
The first quarter was proving to be a tight affair with neither side able to build momentum and both teams struggling to go through the phases.
In the 25th minute Ponty were reduced to 14 men when Joe Miles was shown a yellow card for a high tackle. The resulting penalty from Jac Wilson was missed and the scores remained level.
Quins were then reduced to 14 men when tight head prop Alex Jeffries was sent to the sin bin. However, Ponty couldn’t capitalise as Scrivens’ penalty attempt missed.
Ponty got the first try of the game in the last play of the first half. A deft kick to the corner from Scrivens found winger Dale Stuckey who managed to cross in the corner. Scrivens’ touchline conversion hit the bar.
HALF TIME – Carmarthen Quins 3-8 Pontypridd
Quins started the second half well and took the lead after a break from full back Dale Ford set up flanker Lawrence Reynolds who scored under the posts. Wilson’s conversion was good and Ponty trailed.
In the 49th minute Ponty restored their lead through a Joseph Scrivens penalty.
Just after the hour mark, Quins took the lead when winger Dylan Richards crossed in the corner following a good kick which took the Quins deep into Ponty’s half. Steffan Marshall’s conversion was missed.
Just four minutes later the deficit was reduced to just one point when Scrivens kicked the three following a scrum penalty.
Ponty snatched the lead with just three minutes remaining when centre Jordan Howells barged his way over the line following an impressive driving maul. Scrivens’ touchline conversion was good and Ponty had a six-point lead.
In the last minute of the game Ponty held up a Quins driving maul that was just inches away from the line and turned the ball over, sealing the win.
