In memoriam – Dennis Gethin
Pontypridd RFC are sad to learn of the very recent passing of former Secretary and President of the Welsh Rugby Union Dennis Gethin, aged 79.
Hailing from Seven Sisters, Dennis enjoyed a hugely successful career in both rugby and the law and was the last secretary of the WRU when the role became CEO in 2002. He later became the WRU’s President in 2007 and served in that role for 12 years until 2019.
Dennis, who was a Neath supporter also became a supporter of Pontypridd RFC when he moved to the town to become Town Clerk of Pontypridd Council and often came to matches at Sardis Road with his great friend, neighbour and fellow Ponty supporter Peter Johnson.
Dennis’ dedication to our sport was recognised in 2016 when he was awarded an OBE for his services to Welsh rugby.
On both Dennis’ passing and his commitment to rugby in our country, Ponty RFC CEO Steve Reardon said: “Dennis was a fine servant to the game of rugby football, on and off the field of play. He was a particular champion of both the Welsh Charitable Trust and the ‘grass roots’ of the Community Game. He had a tremendous wit and was an eloquent orator who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”
Pontypridd RFC wishes to pass on its condolences to Dennis’ wife Jan and all the rest of his family and friends at this sad time.
