Merthyr v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview
Next up for Pontypridd RFC is the short journey north up the A470 for a huge Valleys Derby clash against Merthyr RFC. The Admiral Premiership match at The Wern kicks off at 2:30pm.
The last time the two sides met was earlier this year on Thursday 14th March at Sardis Road. The scores were level at 22-all as the match headed into the final few minutes, that was before Ben Burnell stepped up and kicked a late penalty to seal a 25-22 win for Ponty. Harvey Nash grabbed a brace of tries and there was another for Tom Harper that evening. Pontypridd’s last visit to The Wern came the month prior to the aforementioned match, on Saturday 3rd February. A late Josh Phillips try brought Ponty to within 6 points but it wasn’t to be and the Valley Commandos had to settle for a losing bonus-point following a 21-15 reverse.
Last Saturday Pontypridd won their 6th straight match in this season’s Admiral Premiership following a 47-7 win against Bonymaen at Sardis Road – the win extended the team’s lead to 5 points at the top of the table ahead of Merthyr and Neath. The Ironmen have lost their last two matches in the league away at Llangennech last Saturday, and against Bargoed a fortnight prior to that.
Because of these defeats Pontypridd will know that they’ll be facing a revved up, fired up Merthyr team this Saturday – so your support, as always, will be absolutely crucial at The Wern #PontyFans
