Pontypridd v Merthyr – Matchday Preview
This Saturday 22nd March Pontypridd RFC host Merthyr RFC at Sardis Road in the Admiral Premiership, kick-off will be 2:30pm.
Ponty and The Ironmen contested the first Valleys Derby of the current season on Saturday 9th November 2024 at The Wern, and the home side earned the bragging rights following victory that afternoon. Ponty tries from Joe Miles, Lucus Welch and a late Cai James effort wasn’t quite enough to win the match for the Valley Commandos despite finishing the contest with all the momentum, and had to settle for a losing bonus-point for their efforts that day.

This Saturday’s match is just over one year since the two clubs last met at Sardis Road, when, on Thursday evening 14th March 2024 it was Ponty’s turn to edge a close-fought battle against Merthyr. With the scores tied in the pouring Sardis rain, Ben Burnell’s 77th minute penalty-goal sealed a 25-22 win.

To the here and now, Pontypridd will be looking to bounce back following last Friday’s defeat away at Bonymaen. Two bonus-points, courtesy of scoring four tries and losing within seven points has extended the team’s lead over Merthyr to six points at the top of table, but The Ironmen now have two games in hand. Saturday’s derby will be the biggest and most important match of the season to date for both sides, and for Pontypridd it’s now a must-win if they want to keep their title dreams alive: Be our 16th player this Saturday #PontyFans – A Rallying Call Ahead Of The Valleys Derby
