Ponty RFC features in USW Awards Nominations
The strong partnership forged between Pontypridd RFC and The University of South Wales, through the Valleys Rugby Initiative, is reflected in the nominations made for the USW Sport Recognition Awards 2018.
The Awards Night will be held at the SWALEC Stadium on Friday night 11th May.
Pontypridd RFC itself has been nominated for the Partner of the Year Award, with Ioan Paval, who is match analyst for the club, one of the nominees for Academic Student of the Year (Masters).
Flanker Sion Edwards and no8 Alun Lawrence, who have both featured regularly for Ponty this season, are nominated for the Male Sports Person of the Year.
The USW Rugby 1st XV and the Womens’ Rugby XV, both using Sardis Road as their home venue, have been nominated for the Team of the Year.
Pontypridd Head Coach Justin Burnell was positive in his reaction to the USW Awards nominations, reflecting on the strong relationship forged over the past months.
“Our club and the University have always co-existed as strong brands, and the coming together this year under the banner of the Valleys Initiative has been a great success which bodes well for the future.
“There are so many aspects to the partnership which are working well at community level, not just in playing games on the pitch. For Pontypridd RFC to be nominated as partner, and to have our analyst and some players also having their names put forward, is a fantastic achievement and proof that club and college are working together so well.”
