A Rallying Call Ahead Of The Valleys Derby

Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho famously once said: “You are not defeated when you lose, you are defeated when you quit.” Quite an apt statement for where Pontypridd RFC are currently following Friday evening’s defeat away against Bonymaen.

The Valley Commandos headed home from Swansea two nights ago knowing that defeat at Parc Mawr was a body-blow with the team chasing Premiership glory for the first time since 2015. Ponty may be down, but they are far from out in pursuit of the league title that has evaded them over the last decade…and they will certainly never quit!

Ponty have been sitting top of the Premiership standings for many months, however, they have always had neighbours Merthyr hot on their tails with matches in hand. Both teams have been relentless in racking up the wins throughout the current campaign, and prior to Pontypridd’s defeat on Friday neither team had lost a league match since last November.

The top two in the current standings ahead of next Saturday.

Ponty earned two bonus-points in defeat on Friday which has extended the team’s lead at the top of the table to six points. However, Merthyr now have two games in hand ahead of both clubs’ next match which is against each other next Saturday – who writes these scripts?!

Valleys Derby matches between Pontypridd and Merthyr have been everything and more over the years and with everything on the line, next Saturday’s encounter could arguably be the biggest one yet!

A league decider? No. But it’s certainly now the biggest game of the season to date for both clubs. The Ponty squad are an honest and realistic tight-knit group who will give absolutely everything next Saturday, but they will need their 16th player more than ever and that’s YOU!

The backing from the Pontypridd supporters has been absolutely outstanding this season, both home and away. Next week it’ll need to be another level again, so make sure you’re there packing Sardis Road out and hopefully roaring the Valley Commandos on for a massive, massive win!

#PontyFans THIS IS YOUR RALLYING CALL ahead of the Valleys Derby!
