BUCS at Sardis
Sardis Road will be the home of the University of South Wales senior rugby teams for the coming season. The USW teams will be competing in the prestigious British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) tournaments.
British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) was founded in 2008, although competitive University sport has been occurring since 1918 when a meeting was held in Manchester to establish an association to develop sport within universities across the United Kingdom.
After almost one hundred years two associations, University College Sport (UCS) and British Universities Sports Association (BUSC), merged to create the BUCS we know today, with over 170 Universities involved and 4,800 sports teams participating.
This year the University of South Wales (USW) has invested a further £15 million on phase 2 of the development of its 33-acre Sport Park facility on the Treforest Industrial Estate, Nantgarw. USW has identified rugby as a focus sport and are providing professional support in all aspects of its multi-disciplinary BUCS rugby provision.
Dean Parsons, Pontypridd RFC Analyst and course leader for the BSc (Hons) Rugby Coaching & Performance Degree at USW commented:-
“USW BUCS Rugby, with our highly competitive semi-professional squad are delighted to be playing out of Sardis Road on Wednesday evenings this season.
“We promise an exciting brand of rugby in our quest for BUCS Super League status and hope the ‘Sardis faithful’ will get behind us”.
The USW senior XV will play a friendly match against Nottinham Trent University at Sardis Road on Wednesday 20th September, the match kicking off at 5:30pm.
Competitive home BUCS matches then follow, against Swansea University on 11th October and against Cardiff University on 25th October.
