Garyn Smith signs for Pontypridd
Pontypridd RFC are thrilled to announce the signing of centre Garyn Smith for the 2023/24 season from English Championship club Cornish Pirates.
Garyn is already a familiar face to the Ponty faithful having made 44 prior appearances for the Club during a six year period between 2013-2019 whilst with the Cardiff Blues. Hailing from just up the road in Cilfynydd, when Garyn made his first team debut for Ponty in 2013 he followed in the footsteps of father Steve and grandfather Joe to make history in becoming the first family to represent Pontypridd RFC for three consecutive generations.
Prior to his first team debut for Ponty, Garyn had progressed through the Club’s Mini and Junior ranks into Ponty’s Youth team. His undoubted talent meant he was destined for the professional game and was duly drafted into the Blues Academy as a youngster and his abilities as a midfield playmaker were rewarded with Welsh caps at Youth and Under 20 level. It was from the Blues, where he soon developed into a key member of the senior squad, that Garyn was able to make his contribution as a permit player with Pontypridd featuring at intervals but always making an impact.
In May 2022 it was announced Garyn Smith was leaving the Cardiff regional side to join the Penzance-based Pirates on a one-year deal. At the conclusion of his contract in Cornwall Pontypridd RFC are delighted to be able to announce that we will once again see Garyn donning the famous black and white at Sardis Road.
Still only 27 years of age, the signing of former Wales U20’s International Smith is a major coup ahead of next season, and on signing for Pontypridd Garyn said: “I’m really happy to be signing for Ponty, a club which I came through the Mini and Junior section into Youth rugby with. Having a family history with the club means a lot to me and I’m really looking forward to playing back at Sardis.”
Excited to see Garyn back at Ponty, Player/Forwards Coach Chris Dicomidis commented: “It’s good to see Garyn back in black and white. He obviously brings a lot of experience with him having played a number of years at professional level. He’s an experienced head to help guide the younger backs in the team and more importantly someone who is a great guy with huge links to the club. Garyn is a massive signing for us.”
Welcome home, Garyn!
