Jimmy Green was born in Torquay in 1870 but moved to the Pontypridd area to work as a labourer. He soon found a place in the town rugby team, making his debut against Ferndale. In 1892 an amalgamation of the town and Maritime Colliery rugby teams saw Pontypridd becoming a force to be reckoned with, captained by Wales international Ack Llewellyn.
For a few seasons in the early 1890’s, Jimmy Green was the star threequarter in the Pontypridd team, top try scorer in 1893 and called up for a Wales trial but having to withdraw through injury. Known as “Our Jimmy” he was a great favourite with the Pontypridd supporters.
