Llewellyn, Desmond

Des, a native of Treharris, played for Pontypridd over 3 seasons, beginning in September 1951 when he was 20 years old, and at the age of 94 in 2025 lays claim to being the oldest surviving former Pontypridd player.

Des played on the wing and recalls that when they played at home, the team would meet up in the Greyhound pub, and it wasn’t unusual for some of the boys to have a couple of pints before the game! They changed in the swimming baths at Ynysangharad Park, which were 200 yards from the pitch, and after the match there would be 2/6d (13 pence) in your boot. It was all hush hush, because you weren’t supposed to get anything as an amateur. It wasn’t worth much even then, maybe enough to cover bus fare.

Des Llewellyn, winger in eleven games between 1951 and 1954, scoring two tries.
