Merthyr born but Cardiff bred Huw Rees played for Rhiwbina RFC at all levels before going to study at and play for Cardiff College of Education in 1969. He also represented Glamorgan Wanderers for a short spell.
A move to Ponty came about in 1971, Huw playing on the wing and going over for five tries in his fourteen senior appearances, before injury put paid to his ambitions with the club.
Huw eventually emigrated to Bristol and turned out for the North Bristol club. His association with Ponty continued as a supporter, travelling over to watch games at Sardis Road.
