In memoriam – Gareth Thomas
Pontypridd RFC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing this week of former player and administrator Gareth Thomas.
Gareth represented Pontypridd as a centre from 1964 to 1970, scoring 8 tries in his 93 senior appearances. Following his retirement as a player Gareth focussed on his business ventures and served as an official with his home town club of Llantwit Fardre.
He returned to Pontypridd during the late 90s firstly as a committee member then rising to the role of Chief Executive, this during a turbulent time for Welsh rugby with the advent of professionalism and the introduction of regional rugby in 2003. Gareth played a key role in guiding Pontypridd RFC through stormy waters and into the formation of the Celtic Warriors regional franchise.
Paying tribute to his predecessor, current Ponty Rugby CEO Steve Reardon said: “Gareth Thomas served the club on and off the field as a player, administrator and ultimately as Chief Executive Officer. Pontypridd RFC extends its sympathy and sincerest condolences to his family.”
