In memoriam – Joe Smith
It is with deep sadness that Pontypridd RFC has learnt of the passing of legendary former player, captain and coach Joe Smith.
Joe came through the ranks of Pontypridd Youth and had spells with Cilfynydd and Cardiff before returning to Ponty as a senior player, making his debut for the Club in 1963.
A strong running, and hard tackling centre, Joe captained Pontypridd in the 1967/68 and 1969/70 seasons, and went on to become a member of the elite ‘300 club’ with his tally of appearances for the club – he would go on to play 336 times for Ponty in total.
Having gained representative honours with Glamorgan County, Joe Smith went on to coach Pontypridd in 1973. His time as Ponty coach saw the Club enjoy its first ‘Golden Era’ of the 1970’s when the team enjoyed huge success on the field winning multiple trophies during that period.
Joe Smith’s contribution to Pontypridd is unequivocal and he will be sorely missed by everyone connected to the Club. Pontypridd RFC wishes to pass on its sincere condolences to Hilda, Steve, Garyn, Dafydd, Rhodri and all the rest of Joe’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.
