Matchday Preview – Merthyr v Pontypridd
Pontypridd travel up the A470 to play under the bright lights of The Wern this Friday 24th February, the Valleys Derby clash in the Indigo Group Premiership kicks off at 7:30pm.
The match, originally due to take place next month, was rescheduled for this Friday because of Ponty’s Welsh Cup semi-final against Newport in March.
Last season the two clubs met three times throughout the year. It was one win apiece in the Welsh Premiership Cup during the early months of last season. On Saturday 2nd October 2021 Ponty won a close contest 21-14 at Sardis Road, Merthyr avenged that defeat the following month at The Wern.
Then on Saturday 5th March 2022 the two sides met in the Welsh Premiership at Sardis Road, Cole Swannack scored a dramatic, late try to lock the scores together at 17-all before Dale Stuckey stepped up and kicked the conversion for a 19-17 Ponty win.
This season, on Saturday 12th November it was an all too familiar story at Sardis Road for Ponty. The home side had opportunities to close the match out but Sam Jones broke Ponty hearts crossing for a try with the last play of the match to seal a 24-18 win for the Ironmen.
Ponty will be looking to dust themselves down and go again after another agonising, last-gasp defeat at home against Carmarthen Quins last Saturday. Merthyr enjoyed more favourable fortunes last Thursday evening – they won a thrilling contest against Aberavon 38 points to 31 in front of the S4C cameras at The Wern.
