Dylan John: Flanker
A local lad, Dylan John started playing rugby for Pontypridd Mini and Juniors and progressed through the age groups in the section as a youngster. In 2018 Dylan won the Dewar Shield whilst playing for Pontypridd Schools U15s and said, “That was a special moment for me and something I’ll cherish forever.”
After junior rugby Dylan progressed into Pontypridd Youth whilst studying in Coleg y Cymoedd. It wasn’t long until regional age grade representation came along when the young flanker was selected to represent Cardiff Blues U17s. Dylan then made the relatively short journey eastwards to The Bridge Field, Bedwas RFC. It was whilst with Bedwas he made his senior bow in Welsh rugby before joining Rhydyfelin RFC, where he played for two seasons.
It was always Dylan’s dream to play for Pontypridd one day, and that dream became a reality for the 21-year-old in the summer of 2024. Following a successful pre-season with the Valley Commandos he joined the club’s senior ranks on a permanent basis, going full circle from his time as a youngster. Commenting on his move to Sardis, Dylan said: “Signing for Ponty has been a big honour for me, I’ve always wanted to play for Ponty since I was a young age going through the mini and juniors.”
On making the move to Pontypridd, Dylan said: “Everytime you put on that Ponty jersey it means something special and you’ve got to take the opportunity with both hands. Wearing the Ponty jersey reminds you of how much significance and history is behind it. I’m ready to take on the challenge along with my teammates who have got each other’s back week in and week out.”
“Looking ahead I am looking to keep developing as a rugby player and keep working hard every training session and contribute to the success of Pontypridd RFC.”
Following his involvement in Ponty’s pre-season matches, Dylan made his official debut during the team’s opening day Premiership win against Bargoed, and has made two appearances to date for Pontypridd RFC.
