Player Microscope – Ieuan Morris
Ieuan Morris: Hooker
Ieuan started playing rugby for his local club Ynysowen RFC from the age of six years old. When he was ten he joined Merthyr RFC and represented Mertyhr Schools U11’s. More representative honours followed a few years later when Ieuan, attending Rhydywaun School went on to play for Cynon Valley Schools U15’s.
Ieuan then moved into youth rugby with Merthyr whilst also playing for Coleg Y Cymoedd and being involved with the Cardiff Blues Age Grade squad. His first taste of cutting his teeth in the Welsh Premiership soon followed in 2018 when he pulled on the Ironmen’s senior shirt. Remaining at Merthyr for two seasons, Ieuan also played on permit for the Foxes of Bedlinog RFC in the Welsh Championship.
International honours were just around the corner when Ieuan represented Wales U19’s against Japan in 2019.
It was the summer of 2021 that the twenty-one year old hooker signed for Pontypridd, just as covid restrictions were being lifted thus allowing Premiership clubs to resume training. Ieuan has been able to get a full pre-season under his belt with Ponty and said: ”I hope to play as much as I can for a club like Ponty. It’s a privilege to be anywhere near a team with as much history and that has such a big following from the fans. I’ve had such a warm welcome from the players, coaches and fans both on and off the field.”
Ieuan has made a great start to his Ponty career – he’s made five appearances so far this season, arguably his best performance was getting a brace of tries in the 40-38 home win against RGC on the 16th October 2021.
