Ponty Rugby – Covid update
In accordance with Welsh Government rules and in common with the rest of the country, Pontypridd RFC currently remains under strict lockdown.
There was some activity at the club during the summer months when allowed by government and WRU guidelines. After it was ensured that the Sardis Road stadium was completely Covid compliant, the Pontypridd Mini & Juniors, Coleg y Cymoedd and Blues under 18s squads were allowed on to the pitch to train whilst the Football Fives also commenced some activity.
In the meantime a small team of dedicated volunteers came in to carry out socially distanced ground maintenance, painting crash barriers on the terraces and decorating the changing rooms in preparation for the eventual return of rugby. Stadium security was improved with the installation of a CCTV system, with regular patrols also being held.
There were proposals to open the Clubhouse bars in the lead up to Christmas, again according to Welsh Government rules at the time, to give supporters a much-needed opportunity to meet up and re-connect with the club after such a long lay-off. The alarming spread of the virus over the winter months and the ensuing stricter lockdowns imposed put paid to any such plans.
With the club virtually in hibernation, the media team has remained active, projecting Pontypridd RFC to a wider audience and keeping supporters informed of any developments. A significant boost to morale was received with the announcement of a new kit partnership with VX3, the launch of the ‘rainbow shirts’ and access to an on-line shop.
The Ponty Rugby board of directors have worked hard since March 2020 to ensure the survival of the club during the various lockdown periods. They are also planning ahead to ensure that the club is in the best possible position once restrictions are lifted and the playing of rugby resumes at Sardis Road.
For the time being the message to supporters is to stay home, stay safe and to comply with all current lockdown rules.
