Ponty Youth claim vital win at the Met

Pontypridd Youth continued their winning start to the Blues Premiership campaign with a 10pts to 20 away win over Cardiff Met University on Saturday 15th September.

The Youth went into this clash with some trepidation following two defeats against the capital side the previous season. Cardiff Met showed their credentials as current Welsh Youth Champions, coming out of the blocks fast to put the Ponty team on the back foot and scoring an early try.

A rare excursion into the home half however saw Ponty wing Niall Jones scoring in the corner. This spurred another onslaught by the Met causing Ponty to concede another score but showing plenty of character to strike back just before half time, a concerted line-out drive allowing skipper Aneurin James to power over, levelling the scores at the interval 10 points apiece.

The second half saw Ponty tighten and shorten up their game becoming more direct, with some powerful surges from the pack forcing the Met deep into their own half. It was through one of these surges that No8 Sonni Williams crossed for a try converted by Niall Jones. The next twenty minutes saw an all out assault of the visitors’ line by a determined Met side, but through pure determination and a stubbornness the Ponty defence held firm. The closing segment of the game saw Ponty gain control and territory to force Met into  conceding a penalty which Niall Jones duly converted. Ponty then managed the game to its conclusion securing a hard fought victory by  10pts to 20.

This was an excellent result on the road for the Ponty youngsters against an older more experienced Cardiff Met team.
