Pontypridd v Abercwmboi – Matchday Preview

Pontypridd RFC get their 2024/25 pre-season schedule underway on Friday 2nd August when we welcome Abercwmboi RFC to Sardis Road. The friendly match kicks off at 7:30pm.

Pontypridd have played Abercwmboi three times in the Club’s history – all the games were pre-season friendlies prior to the 1993/94, 2011/12 and 2017/18 seasons and all of the encounters ended up being comfortable wins for Ponty away against The Village.

Friday will herald the first time Abercwmboi have played Pontypridd at Sardis Road, although the men from The Welfare Ground have appeared in various Mid District finals at Sardis over the years. Under the guidance of current Head Coach and former Valley Commandos’ favourite Dafydd Lockyer, Abercwmboi consolidated themselves in Division 1 East Central last season finishing 8th, and their ‘Second XV’ won the Keith Jones Mid District Cup.

The Welfare Ground, home of Abercwmboi RFC – venue of the two previous meetings between the two clubs on 6/8/2011 and 12/8/2017.

Tomorrow evening’s match promises to be a good first pre-season test for Pontypridd who will be utilising a mixture of its core squad, wider squad and trialists who will be looking to impress. It’ll also be a great opportunity for supporters to come and see some of Ponty’s exciting new signings in action for the first time in 2024.
