Pontypridd v Brecon – Matchday Preview

This Saturday 16th November Pontypridd RFC welcome Brecon RFC to Sardis Road in the Admiral Premiership for a 2:30pm kick-off.

Saturday will be the maiden meeting between the two clubs, but there are plenty of Ponty links within the Brecon camp. The Dacey brothers, Gavin and Kristian racked up a combined total of nearly 300 appearances the for the Valley Commandos with Gavin in particular, playing a major part in the Club’s last golden period with 257 games for Pontypridd. Also starring for the men from Parc de Pugh is ex-Ponty scrum-half Lewis Jones and former Sardis favourite Geraint Walsh amongst others. But we can’t finish without mentioning Brecon’s Head Coach who needs absolutely no introduction – Pontypridd RFC legend Dale McIntosh.

From one Ponty legend to another, as has been previously announced by the Club this weekend’s match will be the last for Head Coach Chris Dicomidis. When Saturday’s final whistle is blown the curtain will fall on Dico’s two-decade association with the Pontypridd RFC as he moves on to take up the role of Team Manager with Cardiff Rugby.

401 appearances as a player, 14 as Head Coach (after this Saturday) – but only 1 Chris Dicomidis.

Pontypridd suffered their first defeat of the season away against Merthyr on Saturday just gone by 28 points to 25. Ponty finished the match extremely strongly and with a few more minutes the result could have been different, but it wasn’t to be. The Valley Commandos’ losing bonus-point was enough to keep them at the summit of the Admiral Premiership table by just a single point. Brecon sit four places further back in 5th in what is their first ever season at Premiership level. Chief’s men secured their place in this season’s league by winning 20 out of their 22 matches in last season’s Championship West table, finishing 2nd.

The Admiral Welsh Premiership table, accurate as of 11/11/2024.

With it being so tight at the top Pontypridd will know they have to get back on the winning trail this coming Saturday with both Neath and Merthyr hot on their tails – it couldn’t be much closer!
