Pontypridd v Newbridge – Matchday Preview

This Saturday 28th September Pontypridd RFC welcome Newbridge RFC to Sardis Road in the Admiral Premiership, the match kicks off at 2:30pm.

It’s just a shade under 20 years since Newbridge last visited Sardis in the league, and the men from The Welfare ground will be hoping for a repeat result. On Saturday 27th November 2004 a Dan Godfrey try and two Richard Langmead penalties wasn’t enough from Ponty’s point of view, and Newbridge headed back to Gwent with an 18-11 win for their efforts.

The last time the two clubs met in all competitions was on Saturday 14th April 2012 in a Welsh Cup semi-final at Cardiff Arms Park. Newbridge were in the division below Pontypridd at that time, but those in attendance in the capital that day wouldn’t have known that judging by the close-fought affair that unfolded that afternoon. Tries from Matthew Nuthall, Lewis K. Williams and Cory Hill earned Ponty a 28-24 win and the Valley Commandos progressed to the final.

That was the past, but this is the present and second-placed Ponty will be looking to make it three wins out of three this weekend following victories over Bargoed and Llangennech. Saturday’s visitors have also had a good start to their first season back in the Premiership and sit in ‘joint-third’ position in the standings. The Welfare Ground men have enjoyed wins against Brecon and Llangennech before tasting defeat for the first time last Saturday at home against Neath by 25 points to 13.

The Admiral Welsh Premiership league table, accurate as of 23/9/2024.

Pontypridd have have had to earn their two wins in the league so far this season, and all the evidence points to them having to do the same this weekend if they want to extend their winning run at the start of the new campaign – exciting times!
