Premiership round up – 28/12/19
As the second half of the Premiership season got underway in Christmas week, Cardiff finally saw their eleven match winning run come to an end, going down to a close fought defeat at Pontypridd.
It was on Boxing Day that Aberavon hosted Bridgend and showed no signs of a festive hangover, running in six tries to post an impressive 44pts to 3 victory.
On Friday evening Merthyr held out to secure a 31pts to 24 bonus point home win over RGC.
The following day Llandovery and Carmarthen battled out the Dyfed derby to a 13pts all draw at Church Bank, the visitors having led by ten unanswered points at the break. Llanelli went down to a second successive defeat after a previous run of five wins, this time by 14pts to 20 at home to Swansea.
The big match between Pontypridd and Cardiff followed on Saturday evening, screened live on S4C in front of a bumper crowd at Sardis Road. It was a titanic battle which Ponty edged by 26pts to 25 to climb back to fourth in the table. The losing bonus point preserved a healthy fourteen point lead for Cardiff in pole position.
