The Pendragons Roar into Pontypridd RFC
Pontypridd RFC are delighted to announce that the Pontypridd Pendragons Women’s touch rugby team are now officially affiliated to the Club, and as a result they will call Sardis Road their home.
The Pendragons were established in January 2024 with the aim of creating a fun, inclusive environment for players of all age and abilities regardless of experience. The team was initially set up for individuals that weren’t able to play full contact rugby any longer, but felt something was still missing from their lives.
The Pontypridd Pendragons are keen to tell other players and want them to know that there is hope after injury or retirement from rugby union, and that you can still have that ‘rugby family’ team mentality and make friends for life.
The Pendragons’ ethos is about adapting and learning new skills. Touch rugby can tick so many boxes for so many people – retired, injured, or never played before. There is no better feeling than running with that ball in your hands and being supported by your team mates!
They currently have around 15 women who regularly train and play games and their ages range from 20 to over 40 years. Some of the ladies have never played any team sports and some are experienced ex-rugby players. Their online groups frequently attract a lot of interest from women looking to try a new sport or meet new people.
On the official link up with Pontypridd RFC, Pendragons’ co-founders Katie Ridge and Amy Smith have released a joint-statement and said: “By being affiliated with Ponty RFC we hope to reach the wider community in Pontypridd and the RCT area, and we feel passionately that Sardis Road is the right home for our team. With all the recent changes at the club there’s no better time for us to join forces with Pontypridd RFC to help strengthen the existing community relationships, and hopefully build some new community links which can only help strengthen the club as a whole moving into the future.”
Friday 7th June will officially mark the start of Pontypridd Pendragons’ affiliation with Pontypridd RFC and they will be holding their first training session at Sardis Road. This training session will be doubling up as a launch event and after the session there will be a band and a small buffet – this event is open to the general public and the Pendragons would love to see as many of you there as possible to mark this historic occasion.
The session on Friday 7th June runs from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and new participants are more than welcome. The sessions will then take place every Friday at Sardis Road at the same time. For more information contact katie.ridge@hotmail.co.uk
